    My New PC Desk... Empty My New PC Desk...

    Post by Khalus Tue May 03, 2011 7:51 am

    Now this is the part I've been looking forward too ever since I decided to spend nearly every dime I've made from new job on this basement renovation...lol

    I've been at this for at least 2-3 days off and on, {mostly moving my PC and other things around to disassemble my old desk, and finish laying the floor in the primary area!} but for the last I'd say 14hrs or so; I've been totally focused on building my new desk.

    Here are some images of the moving around part and the 4th image is of the completed floor in that area: {I really forgot how horribly built my old desk was...heh}

    Early yesterday I drove out to our local Hoods store {discount home-goods, etc} and bought some new countertops that I talked about. Unfortunately I was unable to find any 12ft pieces of the color-scheme I liked, cause I wanted two 6ft pieces for my corner desk, but I settles on a 10ft instead. However after I got back, cut it in half and laid it out for corner measurements, it was just far too small for my liking {you'll understand when ya see the images below}

    I then decided that I could probably still get 6ft from each side if I didn't run the countertops all the way to the corner. After about 2hrs of mulling it over through tons of careful measurements as perfectly as I could get them; I decided on cutting out and doubling up two 18" x 18" pieces of that OCB Sheathing I had left over as a corner piece. It actually worked out great, plus gave me even more room to place my 40" HDTV in the corner.

    Oh, I also bought a new surface for my desk, which is just laying on top of the old one ~ loose for now ~ but I'm thinking about removing the other one and affixing this new one sometime, but we'll see. In total, it cost me $100 for these two pieces of countertop, and even though I was quite unsure spending that much at first, I'm sure glad I did...it looks so nice now! Plus I'm a good 5-6ft away from the screen instead of 2-3 as before.

    Well...enjoy the images of my progress:

    I suppose, but I didn't write anything down. I'm more an in-my-head-planner and then just do it, and make adjustments as I go along...rofl

    The desk tops are 5' 1/2" each by 21" deep, the corner where the 2 tops meet is 19" x 19", the main desk top is 6' x 36", and the legs are a 4x4 post cut to length. I did not screw the legs into my new floor, its just four 3" screws into the top through the counter, and I bought some nice felt stick-on padding I placed on the bottom. Its all screwed to the wall too, and weight of it keeps it stable, plus my desk top being slid underneath is there just in case anything should fail, but I highly doubt it! Oh and I used 2x2 boards as the wall supports. {the images can help guide ya along...}

    Its quite easy to build, just takes a lot of patience and time to make sure all your cuts are accurate and all the piece fit together as evenly as possible. Even I screwed up a little in some areas where its not perfect, but close enough for a basement PC desk that pretty much; only I will be using and very few will ever see it.

    Good luck!

    Ahh, so you are serious about building one....nices! I can probably help more later, but get all your plans and measurements complete first. The most expensive part are the countertops, but if you have a local discount homeware place like Hoods you can get some B-grade ones like I did for really cheap!

    The rest are 2x2 {$1.67 each} and one 4x4x8 {$7} oh and some OSB sheathing {$7} and thats for a full 4' x 8' sheet. And screws...

    yeah. priced wood and counters at lowes, today think about using 4x4 and 2x2 to form the frame then nice counters for the top it probably take up the whole side of the wall where me and wife have our computer desks and make one long one. might start next week after i get paid and bills paid
